Genital warts are skin diseases caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). More than 100 types of double-stranded HPV have been isolated so far, and among them, about 35 types cause infection in the genital area. Many of them are directly related to the increased risk of cancer in men and women.<\/p>\n
There are two general categories of genital human papillomavirus (HPV): benign low-risk HPV lesions and high-risk neoplastic HPV lesions. Low-risk strains are responsible for genital warts and respiratory papillomatosis, as well as low-grade cervical lesions. Two types 6 and 11 constitute more than 90% of genital warts. These are less likely to have malignant potential.<\/p>\n
Thirteen types of human papillomavirus (HPV) (ie, 33, 35, 39, 40, 43, 45, 51-56, 58) have a moderate risk of neoplastic transformation. HPV-16 and HPV-18 are considered high-risk. More than 70% of cervical, vaginal and penile cancers are caused by these two types.<\/p>\n
The human papilloma virus (HPV) attacks the cells of the basal layer of the epidermis and penetrates the skin and mucosa in the genital area.<\/p>\n
There may be a commune period of 3 weeks to 9 months for wart lesions to appear.<\/p>\n
A patient with genital warts should avoid sexual intercourse until recovery and after that only have intercourse with a condom. The sexual partner must be examined by a dermatologist for involvement. Avoid manipulating and shaving because it causes the virus to spread to other parts of the skin.<\/p>\n
Often the penis, vagina, cervix, perineum and peri-anal area are affected. These mucosal lesions are sometimes seen in the mouth, larynx and trachea. 6-HPV has even been reported in other unusual sites (such as the genitals).<\/p>\n
Most infections are transient and resolve without intervention within 2 years.<\/p>\n
It may indicate previous STDs or other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Oral, larynx, or tracheal mucosal lesions (uncommon) are likely to be transmitted through oral-genital contact. A history of anal intercourse requires a thorough investigation for anal lesions.<\/p>\n
Two common treatment methods are cryotherapy and laser. There is a possibility of recurrence.<\/p>\n
The Gardasil 9 (HPV) vaccine is available in the United States to reduce the risk of certain cancers and precancerous lesions in men and women.<\/p>\n
The vHPV9 vaccine covers HPV subtypes 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52 and 58. Cervarix (bivalent vaccine) and 4 Gardasil (quadrivalent vaccine 6,11,16,18) are also available.<\/p>\n
Children and adolescents under 15 years of age need two doses of the vaccine.<\/p>\n
