Alopecia areata is a non-scarring, relapsing type of hair loss that can affect any area with hair and can appear in different patterns. Although it is a benign condition and most patients are asymptomatic, it can cause mental and emotional problems.
In fact, it is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks a person’s own hair and causes hair loss in that area.
This disease can be limited to one or more small circular areas or involve all the hair on the body.
Treatment:
This disease is benign and spontaneous recovery and recurrence are common. Treatment can be local or systemic.
Intralesional corticosteroid therapy is usually the treatment with the best response rate. Systemic treatments such as corticosteroids and drugs that regulate the immune system are also used for treatment.
New treatments such as tofacinib and baricinib have had significant results in recent years.
