Ichthyosis refers to a relatively rare group of skin disorders characterized by excessive amounts of superficial scales and excessive dryness of the skin. It is considered a disorder of the stratum corneum or cornification and is due to abnormal epidermal differentiation or metabolism.
Ichthyosiform dermatoses may be classified based on clinical presentation, genetic presentation, and histological findings. There are hereditary and acquired forms of ichthyosis.
Ichthyosis vulgaris begins in early childhood, usually between 3 and 12 months, and is characterized by fine scales and varying degrees of skin dryness.Scaling is more common on the trunk, abdomen, buttocks, and legs.Flexor areas such as the folds of the elbow, behind the knee, are spare.There may be a connection between ichthyosis vulgaris and diseases.
Atopic dermatitis should exist, because one third to half of patients show characteristics of atopic dermatitis.
Treatment :
Oral retinoids control scales.
